Sydney Man To Be Sentenced For Letting Baby Burn
A Sydney man who left a baby in a hot bath so he could smoke a cigarette is expected to be sentenced for causing the boy horrific burns.
Atare Tepania pleaded guilty in August to reckless grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in November 2015.
He admitted leaving the baby in an unplugged bath with the hot water running while he left the room to smoke a cigarette and check his mobile phone.
When he returned the 10-month-old's skin was peeling and Tepania grabbed him by one arm, only to drop him on the tiled floor.
He later tried to feed the boy a bottle but pressed it so hard the boy's mouth bled.
The boy was left with burns to about 40 per cent of his body.
His mother in October told Penrith District Court of the "nightmare" of seeing her comatose boy lying in hospital for nearly a month.
He now hates baths, doctors, medicine and hospitals.
Judge Robert Sutherland is expected to sentence Tepania on Thursday.
