A Breach In Medicare System Means Every Member Is At Risk
A vulnerability in a government system has allowed a darknet trader to access Australians' Medicare details and sell them on an illegal online auction site.
It is believed that the illegal trader has exploited a health agency's system as they are displaying a Department of Human Services logo on their website profile.
Medicare card details are being sold for under $30 online and it is thought that at least 75 Australians have been affected since October 2016.
These details have been used by drug syndicates for identification fraud so that they can buy property or vehicles under different names.
Security agencies are currently investigating the illegal sales with assistance from the Department for Human Services.
