300KG Of Drugs Smuggled Into Australia In Highlighter Pens
Police have confirmed that 21,000 highlighter pens containing almost 300 kilograms of ephedrine were smuggled into Australia from China.
The shipment arrived in Sydney earlier this month on a container of stationary supplies from China when Australian Border Force Officers noticed a strange substance inside the highlighters.
The substance was tested and has now been confirmed as ephedrine which is used to make methamphetamine.
Police have alleged that the large amount of drugs could have potentially been used to create around 2.4 million hits of ‘ice’ and would have had an estimated street value of $120 million.
One man has now been charged with importing the commercial quantity of a border controlled precursor. Meantime, two other men were arrested in relation to the drug smuggling but have since been released.
