Woman Rips Off Cornea After Leaving Lenses In For Too Long

Thankfully my eyesight has always been in tip top condition and I've never had to face the task of putting contact lenses in my eyes...seriously the whole thought of putting my finger in my eye has always given me the heebie jeebies.

But putting the contact lenses in is apparently child's play in comparison to knowing when to take them out, after this one woman pulled off her CORNEA while taking out her contacts.

Meabh McHugh-Hill, a 23-year-old from the UK is lucky to still be able to see after leaving her contact lenses in for two hours longer (10 hours total) than the recommended time and ripping part of her cornea out as a result.

Literally, I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit...

Now of course, 10 hours doesn't really seem like that long, especially when you consider that most of us work an 8 hour day and then probably take 1-2 hours of travel time...surely contact lenses can withstand that much time!

But apparently not, and Meabh learnt this the hard way after her lens became stuck to her left eyeball one unfortunate day.

Now of course her cornea didn't just rip off easily, in fact Meabh was using quite a bit of force to get the lens unstuck when the incident happened, causing severe pain and damage to her left eye.

"I ran upstairs to take them out and stupidly, in a rush, I just pinched my eye first like i normally would do to get the contact out," she explained.

"But I should have moistened them first - because this time my eye was so dry the contact had actually glued itself to my eyeball."

As a result, the university student was forced to stay in darkness for five days after the injury caused her left eye to completely shut and the right eye to become extremely sensitive to light.

"I suffered a week of unbearable pain - it was excruciating, like nothing I've ever experienced before," she said.

"My vision is okay now but my eye is still very sensitive. I was so, so lucky. I could have lost my sight. I just didn't realise how dangerous wearing contact lenses could be if you eyes are not moistened."

Meabh now has a permanent scar on her left eyeball and she will never be able to have laser eye surgery or wear contact lenses again...but tbh we don't think she'd ever want to go near the lenses ever again after going through this ordeal...
