“If a woman vomits within two hours of taking the contraceptive pill, it may not have been fully absorbed into her bloodstream so she should take another pill straight away,” she said.
“So long as she is not sick again, she should still be protected against pregnancy.
“If the woman continues to be sick, extra contraception should be used (such as condoms) while she is ill and for two days after recovering.
“Very severe diarrhoea (six to eight watery stools in 24 hours) may also reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill.
“If this happens, women should continue to take their pill as normal, but use additional contraception while ill and for two days after recovering.
“If a woman’s sickness or diarrhoea continues, she should contact a healthcare professional.”
