Sydney Gearing Up For Worst Mozzie Outbreak EVER
Bad news if you are one of those unlucky people like me, who ALWAYS get bitten by mosquitoes!
This summer is shaping up to be the WORST for mozzies, with record numbers of the little blood suckers expected to invade Sydney.
Dr Cameron Webb, Medical Entomologist at University of Sydney and NSW Health Pathology, told 9 News, 'The mosquitoes are waiting in our wetlands,'
He advises that everyone from young children through to the elderly should be extra careful during what's expected to be a wet summer.
Dr Webb has shared some helpful tips to try and keep mozzies at bay, one of which includes wearing lighter coloured clothing.
He believes mosquitoes like dark colours, and while wearing lighter coloured clothes won't stop them completely, you are less likely to attract them.
He also recommends avoiding stinky cheese, as it actually reminds the bloodsuckers of smelly feet.
You should also wear closed toe shoes instead of thongs, and getting close to fans are also thought to 'hide you' from mosquitoes because they disturb a mozzie's flight path.
Try to avoid being outside in the late afternoon to early evening as that is the mosquitoes feeding time over summer.
Dr Webb also recommends the best repellents to use are ones that contain diethyltoluamide (DEET), picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oils.
You should also try and avoid water as it also encourages the blood suckers, which is why mosquitoes could be in high numbers this summer.
So, in other words, if like me you attract mozzies, you should probably stay indoors this summer wearing a suit of armour!
