The New Way To Find Out If You Might Die In The Next 5-Years

Would you want to know if you were going to die within the next five years?

If you're curious to know more about your own mortality, you'll be pleased to hear that a simple blood test may provide the answer.

A new study suggests that an inflammatory marker found in middle-aged adults may be a more reliable predictor of longevity than other previous methods.

Inflammatory markers are known to be associated with cancer, chronic heart disease, strokes and other serious conditions. The greater the inflammation, the more serious the disease.

Researchers collected data from between 1997 and 1999 on over 6,500 men aged between 45 and 69. Participants were followed until 2015 to see if they had died.

They looked at markers of inflammation, including the new method - interluekin-6 (IL-6). The other two markers were: C-reactive protein (CRP) and α1-acid glycoprotein (AGP).

Previous research had found the latter to be the strongest predictor of death within five years. But the new study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, found that IL-6 was a more accurate predictor of dying in the short and long term.

Experts say that a simple blood test could detect these inflammatory markers and your likelihood of surviving.

Sure, the test can't predict if you're going to be unexpectedly hit by a bus, but the technology could be extremely beneficial when coming up with health plans for individuals.

Lead researcher Professor Archana Singh-Manoux, from University College London, has described the technologies as 'exciting'.

The question is, if this blood test was available at your local clinic, would you really want to know?
