Worker Sacked After Using A Twisties Packet To Ditch Work

Some days you wake up and just don’t want to go to work. Most people would just chuck a sickie but one creative electrician from Western Australia has come up with a sneaky way to actually avoid working while at work.

However, his sneaky trick has cost him his job.

The Fair Work Commission found that Tom Colella was fairly dismissed from his job after he used a packet of Twisties to mask his work devices GPS. The Commission heard that Colella was using the foil packet to act as a “Faraday cage”. By keeping the device inside the packet, it effectively blocked electromagnetic fields and kept his location hidden.

It’s alleged that Colella used this trick to play up to 140 games of golf while on the clock, although this can’t be proved. He was employed by Water Corporation WA contractor Aroona Alliance for 20 years before an anonymous tip-off claimed he had been sneaking off to play gold during his hours.

However, Aroona Alliance did find that Mr Colella had been committing fraud by claiming to be at work while at a different location for 21 days during April last year. The simple scheme was unravelled by Colella’s personal digital assistant (PDA), which was used to keep track of employees work tasks. The PDA showed that he was at home when he claimed to be completing tasks.

Colella, who was also a senior delegate at the Electrical Trades Union, argued that his PDA had suffered a “glitch” and that he had phone records to back up his claim that he was unfairly dismissed. However, commissioner Bernie Riordan said the electrician had been “deliberate in trying to hide his whereabouts and deceive his employer”. The commissioner also said, “I can find no plausible explanation as to why Mr Colella would create a Faraday cage around his PDA, except to obstruct the GPS collecting capacity of the device”.

The creative use of the Twisties packet definitely enabled the sneaky sparky’s scheme. However, it seems that everything must come to and end and the price must be paid.
