Artist Mum Serves School Lunches With A Side Of Feminism

School lunches just got sassy!

Artist Meaghan Elderkin Knowlton wanted to give her daughter, Holden, a boost at lunch time, so she began adding illustrations to the nine-year-old’s napkins each day.

Because what’s better than lunch with a side of feminism and laughter?

The idea of napkin art stemmed from Meaghan’s own childhood.

(There’s obviously some seriously talented creative-types in this family!)

And while the cartoons and illustrations can vary from dinosaurs to quotes of wisdom, Elderkin’s recent artwork is based on kick-ass women in power – no doubt prompted from Trump becoming President elect of the USA.

“I felt really small and powerless after the results of the election,” Elderkin told The Huffington Post.

“I wanted to remind my daughter (and myself, I guess) that we’re still strong and powerful even when we’re afraid.

“A lot of strong women have come before us, and they’ve had to fight even scarier obstacles.”

Michelle Obama, Lucille Ball and Amelia Earhart featured on recent lunch napkins.

But one that especially resonated with Holden was Malala Yousafzai, Meaghan said.

“We saw her speak in Providence this past summer and she (Holden) immediately wanted to set up a lemonade stand to contribute to Malala’s fund,” she said.

While some of the earlier pieces of artwork – seriously, are you supposed to wipe your hands and mouth with these epic drawings? – aren’t so politically motivated, we’d still love to have them in our lunchbox!
