The actors who were actually drunk on set
While many of us like to have a drink at the end of a busy work week, doing so on the job would probably result in not having a work week at all.
Not for some. Especially not for some in Hollywood.
Chances are, if you’ve seen Fight Club, Black Swan or even The Sound of Music (clutches pearls), at one point or another, a major character was three sheets to the wind.
Margot Robbie in The Wolf of Wall Street
How does a relatively unknown ex-neighbours actress gear up for a sex scene with silver screen heavyweight Leonardo DiCaprio?
For Robbie, it worked. Not only was the scene completely intoxicating (sorry) but her performance in the film shot her straight to the A-list.
And considering the amount of drugs and booze featured in the film, it was the only incident of actual drinking on-set.
Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter
Radcliffe would often unintentionally show up more than buzzed from the night before.
"I went into work still drunk. I can point to many scenes where I’m just gone. Dead behind the eyes. I have a very addictive personality. It was a problem," he has been previously quoted as saying.
Anna Kendrick in Drinking Buddies
OK, so this movie is about people who work at a brewery, but for the most part, all of the beer chugged was non-alcoholic. Except that time when the crew swapped the fake stuff with the real deal. The scene where she and her fiancé in the movie play a drinking game where Kendrick's character keeps losing, and is forced to drink more and more beer… yep, she was pretty hammered IRL.
She told Vulture, "I was pounding beer and I didn’t realise it was real until halfway through the take. I was like, I’m super drunk right now! And so as soon as the take was over, I had to announce to everybody that I was drunk at work. I was horrified by the idea that I was going to be the next troublesome star who got drunk and started flipping over tables or whatever. I just tried to sit quietly until I sobered up."
Shia LaBeouf in Lawless
Like any method actor, LaBeouf was just getting into character. I mean, c'mon, he played a bootlegger during Prohibition.
"I did it for the movie. I didn’t drink off set for no reason," LeBeouf told Page Six.
"I did it because, when I showed up on set the next day, my [bleep]ing eyes looked like this and my face…had that drunk bloat that I needed, that I couldn’t have if that wasn’t going on."
Brad Pitt and Edward Norton in Fight Club
One of the most memorable scenes (OK, they're all pretty amazing) was on that came about almost by accident.
The scene where Pitt and Norton are drunkenly hitting golf balls? Not acting. David Fincher, the director, saw the pair having a swing with some beers during some downtime, caught it on film and put it in the movie.
Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman in Black Swan
Kunis has denied it but director Darren Aronofsky claims that she and Portman downed tequila before their sex scene.
Like Margot Robbie, the tequila was to dial-down the nerves, but unlike Robbie, the pair apparently polished off the entire bottle.
Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Seems as though Lawrence and some of her cast mates liked nothing more than to get loose on the set of the second Hunger Games movie.
During a Google+ Hangout fan Q&A, the stars were asked about their favourite memory from filming. Josh Hutcherson, who played Peeta, recalled a long day shooting with Woody Harrelson and "were just running around acting like total idiots while you guys were trying to film. It was so much fun."
"We were drunk," Lawrence laughed. "That was fun. That was the first time I've ever drank at work."
Hutcherson quipped, "It was the first, but it wasn't the last!"
Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music
And no, it wasn't while Fraulein Maria was knocking up those curtain outfits for the Von Trapp kids either.
Apparently the bloke who owned the land where the Do-Re-Me scene was filmed made his own schnapps and Andrews would take shots while she practiced her guitar.
