Teacher Enlists Pearl Jam Education
A US teacher working in Africa has enlisted some high-profile help to instruct his ninth-grade English class - Pearl Jam!
Peace Corps volunteer Matt Westerberg, who's working with students in Northern Ethiopia, tells Alternative Nation that he's a big fan of Eddie Vedder and company.
“After class one day I jokingly wrote the chorus line to Pearl Jam’s 'Even Flow” on the chalkboard. I thought it would be funny to have the kids try and learn it. They laughed their way through it. The next day, they demanded to try it again. After a while we went through most of the song day by day as a motivational tool. At first it was all just a joke, but after a while, the students began to really build confidence through learning the song."
Westerberg says he's planning to turn to Foo Fighters next and will create a video featuring one of their tunes in time for Dave Grohl's birthday in January.
