Melissa Etheridge Recording Stax Records Tribute Album

Melissa Etheridge will be releasing a tribute album honoring the legendary Stax Records, according to Billboard. The singer will be covering songs by artists from the label's diverse catalog, including soul icon Otis Redding and blues singer Albert King.

Melissa is currently recording the album in the city where the label was founded: Memphis, Tennessee. “There were no racial boundaries inside Stax,” she says. “And I have a very color blind audience. I’ve spent months just honing in on which songs to record, the album’s ultimate feel and how we can marry today with yesterday and create something new.” The yet-to-be-titled project will be released later this year .

In other Melissa Etheridge news, the singer is teaming up with Alkalife TEN to donate 35,000 bottles of spring water to the people of Flint, Michigan.

"I wrote the song 'Bring Me Some Water' so I thought it only fitting I should bring some water to a community that really needs it," Melissa says in a statement.

She adds, "We help each other... that's what we do.  Water is fundamental to life and I believe that no individual should ever go thirsty so I contacted Alkalife and asked that we join forces and together donate water to people that really need it."

The truckload of water is expected to arrive in Flint tomorrow. The city’s water has been contaminated for nearly two years as a result of the city switching the source of its water supply. The drinking water has been linked to a number of serious illnesses, prompting President Obama to declare a federal emergency in the city earlier this year.

Melissa Etheridge: This Is M.E. Australian tour kick's off Wednesday March 23 at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney. Followed by shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. Details at Ticketmaster.com.au
