Trailer: Red Dog Film Prequel Released

The Red Dog film prequel is as true blue as it is new, with a hoard of homegrown talent gathering to tell the backstory of the loveable Australian canine.

The official trailer for the highly-anticipated flashback flick, Red Dog: True Blue, was released on Thursday.

Director Kriv Stenders, producer Nelson Woss and writer Daniel Taplitz have reunited for the film, returning to the remote setting of the 2011 original - the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

It is here young Australian actor Levi Miller, in the role of 11-year-old Mick, arrives to live on a cattle station owned by his grandfather, played by Bryan Brown.

Fellow Aussies Justine Clarke, Hanna Mangan Lawrence and Thomas Cocquerel join British actor Jason Isaacs in the cast for the coming-of-age prequel while canine crew member Phoenix takes centre stage.

Koko, the Australian kelpie star of the first film, died from heart disease in Perth in 2012, while Red Dog actors Josh Lucas and Rachael Taylor will not reappear due to the story's timeline.

The release, from Roadshow Films and Good Dog Distribution, is among a number of films to receive financial support from the state's Royalties for Regions program, including mystery-drama Jasper Jones (2016).

Red Dog: True Blue opens in Australian cinemas on December 26.
