CONFUSION OVER REPORTS TOM PETTY HAS PASSED AWAY
US rocker Tom Petty is reportedly clinging to life in a southern California hospital after conflicting reports that he had died.
CBS News had earlier reported that Petty, 66, had died after life support was switched off following cardiac arrest on Sunday.
TMZ later reported, citing unidentified sources, that Petty was not expected to live much longer but was "still clinging to life."
Representatives for the singer did not return calls for comment or confirmation on Petty's condition.
The Los Angeles Police Department, that was cited by CBS as the source of the death confirmation, says it was a mistake.
"The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertently provided to some media sources," it tweeted.
"However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting."
Petty first found fame with the Heartbreakers back in the 1970s.
He had only just come off the back of a tour that ended at the Hollywood Bowl last Monday.
The tour was in celebration of 40 years with the Heartbreakers.
