Matthew Newton Is Secretly Engaged!!!

Troubled Australian actor Matthew Newton has allegedly popped the question to girlfriend Catherine Schneiderman. The pair met after Newton cut all ties with Australia in an attempt to rebuild his life in New York following his well publicised history of violence.

Newton was charged with savagely beating two of his actress girlfriends, Wonderland and former Neighbours star Brooke Satchel and movie star Rachael Taylor.

His life continued to spiral out of control after he was accused of trashing a hotel room in a drug frenzy. He was then dumped as host of X Factor and sacked from Nova radio station. The alleged violent acts didn’t end there. Newton was charged with attacking a taxi driver in Kings Cross and beating up a receptionist in a Miami hotel.

The 39-year-old is said to have popped the question to the 23-year-old who is the daughter of New York Attorney General, Eric.

New Idea claims the couple have kept the news secret from friends and family, including Newton's famous parents, Bert and Patti. His new fiancee's father Eric Schneiderman, is also said to have been kept in the dark, which may have something to do with his tireless campaigns against domestic violence.

It’s unclear whether Newton has met his future in-laws but the publication claims Schneiderman has been spotted wearing a large diamond ring, but removes it when visiting her father.

The publication also claims the 23-year-old is well aware of her Australian beau's past but she considers him a 'misunderstood genius.'

The engagement comes just months after Newton's father Bert told the Herald Sun the 39-year-old had finally found light at the end of the tunnel.

'I have always prayed for a happy ending, and I think it has arrived,' Bert told the Herald Sun.

Newton's history with mental illness has been well publicised.
