Is This The End For The Simpsons?
Can The Simpsons continue without Mr Burns, Ned Flanders and Principal Skinner?
That was the question on everybody's lips after it was revealed Harry Shearer, the man behind the voice of the three characters, was leaving the show.
The actor says a decision was made by the show's producers not to renew his contract. "This because I wanted what we've always had: the freedom to do other work," he tweeted.
However, TMZ reports that Shearer is actually leaving over a dispute about back-end and merchandising payments.
The Simpsons, with 26 seasons, is the longest-running American sitcom and the longest-running animated TV series.
20th Century Fox recently renewed its contract for two more seasons but can the show keep going without many of its prominent characters?
Shearer also voices the character of Lenny, Kent Brockman, Waylon Smithers, Reverend Lovejoy and Dr Hibbert.
"The Simpsons" continue without @TheHarryShearer? Won't be the same," @marcusleshock tweeted.
"how can the simpsons keep going without harry shearer? he voices so many characters," @santoaster tweeted.
"Think this is the beginning of the end for The Simpsons with @theharryshearer going. They've just lost most of their best characters," was a tweet from @andyjamesbell.
It remains unclear whether the show's producers will kill the characters off or give them new voices.
Either way, the fans won't be happy.
