Did Gilly Just Drop The MASSIVEST Plot Twist About Jon Snow?
This story includes major Game of Thrones Season 7 spoilers.
A theory about Jon Snow has been gaining some serious traction since Monday’s ‘Eastwatch’ episode.
Among the dragon-touching, the return of Gendry (finally), Littlefinger’s switcheroo on Arya and Cersei revealing she’s up the duff… there was an innocuous detail uttered by Gilly which seemed to confirm Jon Snow’s legitimacy to the Iron Throne.
We’re not even joking.
Yeah, the scene where Gilly is with Sam, reading a passage from a High Septon Maynard which mentions numbers of steps, bowel movements and a marriage annulment.
The annulment is key. Gilly tells Sam that “Prince Ragger,” aka Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, had his marriage annulled and was remarried in a secret ceremony in Dorne.
Rhaegar and Lyanna Stark were the parents of Jon Snow and, up until now, thought to have not being married at all, hence Jon was considered a bastard.
In fact, we were led to believe that Rhaegar actually kidnapped Lyanna, who was to be married to Robert Baratheon. This then kicked off the events that started Robert’s Rebellion, removing the Targaryens from the Iron Throne.
Still with me? Good.
Now, Rhaegar was married to, and had two kids with, Elia Martell. Since we found that his marriage was annulled, however, it now seems more likely that he and Lyanna actually eloped, resulting in baby Jon Snow.
This means that not only is Jon legitimate – he may be ahead of Daenerys in the line of succession to the Iron Throne.
The line of succession was this: Rhaegar, Viserys then Daenerys.
Rhaegar was the heir but, as his first two kids had died, that now leaves a very legitimate Jon as next in line.
