David Jones Is In Hot Water Over Facebook Apology

Retail chain David Jones has come under fire after they issued an apology to a Facebook user who made a complaint about the company's use of a "black model" on the cover of their summer beauty catalogue.

Other David Jones customers are now FUMING, not just over the complaint, but over the fact that David Jones felt they needed to apologise! And rightly so.

The original complaint was posted on the retailer's Facebook page, where the woman expressed her disappointment by the cover because she felt the model used didn't "represent the general population of Australia".

The woman wrote in her statement, "Although I think your use of the beautiful black model is very attractive, I don't feel it represents the general population of Australia.

"How on earth am I expected to relate to this cover? I can't wear ANY of her makeup, I don't know ANYONE who looks like her...she could have been used on the back page."

The upset woman continued her rant saying that she was "pi**ed off" at large corporations "going for the minority feel good". She concluded by saying, "Please think about your shoppers next time."

What has other customers up in arms is that David Jones did not immediately reprimand the complaint or take the opportunity to defend their model.

Instead they issued an apology to the customer! Their response said, "We are very sorry you feel this way. We have passed your feedback onto our Marketing Department for their information and consideration."

And well, people across social media are not happy.

One Facebook user wrote, "In response to the complaint you received regarding a model who happens to have black skin...I would like to ask you not to submit an apology to the complaint, as you have done nothing wrong."

Another commented saying, "Your whimpering reply was disgraceful."

Following the significant backlash, David Jones sent out a second apology, saying they "are not and will never apologise for representing the diverse makeup of the Australian community in our marketing material.

"We are proud of the cover and talent used for our SS17 beauty catalogue and will continue to proudly celebrate diversity."

"We acknowledge our initial response was not appropriate as it does not reflect our values."

The original complaint and response by David Jones has since been deleted.
